The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Thirteen years after readers first met Charlie, the protagonist of Steven Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower, the sensitive 15-year-old high school freshman is back – and this time he’s coming to a movie theatre near you in a film adaptation directed by the author, produced by the team behind Juno and starring Emma Watson, Ezra Miller (We Need to Talk About Kevin), Logan Lerman and Paul Rudd.

I’m looking forward to it – and not just because I’m curious to see how Emma Watson will cope on-screen without a wand in hand! The novel took the format of a series of letters by Charlie to an anonymous reader, in which he talks about subjects such as losing a friend to suicide, and the sometimes isolating nature of high school. It became something of a cult book, and no doubt has influenced many a YA fiction author. And with the likes of The Smiths, Sonic Youth and Cocteau Twins, the soundtrack sounds promising too – apparently, the selection was made by the author himself.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is set for UK release on 3rd October.
